Certified Training in Digitalization Technology

In order to develop the competence of prospective alumni, the Civil Engineering Department of the Jakarta State Polytechnic held digitalization technology-based certificate training in the form of "Building Information Modeling (BIM) Training."

The Civil Engineering Department of the Jakarta State Polytechnic makes every effort to prepare its graduates to become human resources (HR) who have knowledge according to industry needs and are able to translate the challenges and characteristics of future competencies. For this reason, the Department of Civil Engineering organizes Building Information Modeling (BIM) certification training.

This BIM training was attended by prospective graduates from the Civil Engineering Department on September 5–6, 2022. However, this kind of training is on the routine agenda for the Department of Civil Engineering by involving lecturers and students, especially in preparing final year students to have a deeper understanding of BIM beyond the lecture material in class.

BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is a system or technology that includes some important information in the design, construction, and maintenance processes that is integrated into 3D modeling.

This BIM has begun to be used in strategic projects in Indonesia to support technological advances in the construction sector. The application of BIM is very important to be developed in Indonesia because it can simplify and speed up the work process on projects. One of the advantages of BIM is the integration of information from various disciplines in one 3D model. The general public finds it easier to read 3-dimensional project drawings than 2-dimensional ones. With a 3-dimensional image, it will be easier for the project owner to understand the technical drawings submitted by the contractor.

Benefits and Purpose of BIM

Why should you use BIM in project implementation? Maybe that's the question on your mind. Some of the benefits of using BIM below will answer your question.

  1. BIM has 3-D visuals to make it easier to understand the plans to be built.
  2. The use of BIM will make it easier to calculate the volume of work quickly and accurately.
  3. BIM will provide cost information, or RAB, on each work component so that we can predict the estimated cost of one work component.
  4. BIM can display 3-D images on complex work such as ironing bridge structures, for example.
  5. The use of BIM is not just for displaying animated images of buildings but rather for managing project information quickly and accurately.
  6. The use of BIM at the beginning of work is used for clash detection. We can find out if this 2D plan drawing will be applied in the field if there is a clash or not, especially between the structural, architectural, and MEP drawings.
  7. Another benefit of using BIM is easy coordination between contractors and owners or consultants anywhere and anytime. BIM will be uploaded to a cloud computing service that can be accessed by the owner. The owner will run the image through the cloud computer service and mark anything that is incorrect.

BIM software

For BIM software commonly used in Indonesia, see, among others, Autodesk, Benthley, Allplan, Lumion, and so on.

BIM levels

To create BIM for a project, a team consisting of BIM engineers and BIM modelers is needed. There are several levels of BIM creation ability.

BIM Level 0 is capable of producing 2D drawings without collaboration, such as Autocad drawings.

BIM level 1 BIM users can model images in three dimensions, but only through visualization software such as Google Sketchup, 3ds Max, and so on.

BIM Level 2, BIM users model 3-dimensional images accompanied by volume calculations, schedules, and costs. At this level, BIM can already be used for collaboration between disciplines.

BIM level 3, At this stage, BIM users can already coordinate with other parties through integrated cloud-based services. Besides that, BIM can already be used as a project manager in collaboration with various parties.

The Civil Engineering Department of the Jakarta State Polytechnic is holding a training in 2022, which will be attended by 24 students from the D-3 Building Construction Study Program. Implementation of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) Training Activities using the Autodesk Infraworks Department of Civil Engineering PNJ was held for 2 days on September 5–6, 2022. All technical implementations were carried out by the training organizers under the coordination of the Autodesk Revit training team, which included a schedule of activities, place, facilities, sources, materials, and costs. implementation of capacity and competency development for PNJ Civil Engineering students and alumni offline in Building B, Floor 2, Room B.219 for 2 days. The series of events consisted of delivering material along with case examples and hands-on training using a computer at the PNJ Civil Engineering Computer Lab and each participant's laptop.

This BIM training was held in order to address the problem of the need for competent manpower to meet the needs of the construction services industry, namely to prepare competent human resources in accordance with the needs of the job market in the construction services industry who are certified. Increasing the capacity and competence of the human resources of PNJ Civil Engineering students and alumni is urgently needed so that PNJ Civil Engineering graduates are ready to face the development of the needs of the job market, which is currently entering the fourth industrial revolution.
